New traffic fine rates announced in Punjab

The Punjab government has approved a major reduction in traffic violation fines to provide relief to motorists while continuing to enforce road discipline across the province.

Official sources said the decision was approved after the Chief Minister endorsed a summary submitted by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic. The revised fines will now be tabled in the upcoming Punjab Assembly session for final approval.

Under the proposed changes, motorcycle fines have been cut from Rs2,000 to Rs1,000, while rickshaw penalties have been reduced from Rs3,000 to Rs1,000. However, fines for serious violations will remain at Rs2,000.

For private vehicles such as cars and jeeps, the penalty has been lowered from Rs5,000 to Rs3,000. Authorities clarified that over speeding fines will stay unchanged as part of continued road safety enforcement.

High end vehicles with engine capacity above 2000cc will now face a reduced fine of Rs10,000 instead of Rs20,000. Similarly, penalties for light transport vehicles including vans, coasters, and Mazdas have been reduced from Rs20,000 to Rs7,000.

Fines for heavy transport vehicles like buses and trucks have also been brought down from Rs20,000 to Rs10,000.

Officials said the wider revision of penalties across different categories is aimed at balancing enforcement with financial relief for the public during ongoing economic pressure.
