Massive hailstorm hits major highway routes

A weather system brought heavy rain and hail to Islamabad and the Salt Range area along the Lahore–Islamabad Motorway on Saturday afternoon. The sudden change in weather caused temperatures to drop sharply and briefly affected traffic on key routes.

A strong hailstorm hit the Salt Range section of the M2 Motorway and covered the road with ice within minutes.

The storm reduced visibility significantly, creating dangerous driving conditions for commuters. As the road became slippery, authorities asked drivers to be very careful while traveling between Lahore and Islamabad.

Islamabad and Rawalpindi also saw rain, strong winds, and hail, with temperatures falling across both cities. Water collected in low-lying parts of several sectors, while some areas experienced short power outages.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department issued an update saying a westerly wave is currently affecting the country. It forecast rain and wind, and thunderstorms for Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and parts of upper Punjab over the next 24 hours. The department also warned that isolated hailstorms could occur in the Pothohar region.

Further forecasts included heavy rain and snowfall in Murree, Galiyat, and other northern areas, with officials noting that unstable weather may continue in the coming days.

Authorities advised drivers to slow down and keep a safe distance during rain or hail. Motorists were also urged to stay alert on motorway routes and check weather updates before starting long journeys.
