Major Karachi roads closed for fourth day after deadly protest

Several key roads in Karachi have stayed closed for the fourth straight day because of tight security measures put in place after protests broke out last Sunday. The unrest followed the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

The demonstration held outside the US consulate turned violent, leaving 11 people dead and many others injured. According to traffic officials, MT Khan Road has been sealed off with barriers and a heavy security presence.

Containers have been placed on the PIDC Bridge, while routes leading to the Jinnah Bridge and Mai Kolachi are also blocked.

Jinnah Bridge remains closed, along with the stretch from Boat Basin to Mai Kolachi Road. People living in these areas are being allowed to move in and out only after showing identification.

The protests in Karachi erupted after news of Khamenei’s martyrdom spread. Demonstrators carried black flags and raised anti-US and anti-Israel slogans.

During the chaos, some protesters broke through the outer wall of the US consulate and damaged property. Gunfire during the incident claimed at least 11 lives.
