Karachi Mayor announces new opening date for Karimabad Underpass

Significant updates have emerged regarding long-delayed infrastructure projects in Karachi, as Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced new timelines for their completion.

Projects like the BRT Red Line and the Karimabad (Meena Bazaar) underpass have faced prolonged delays, causing major difficulties for commuters.

Speaking at a press conference, the mayor discussed ongoing construction work across the city, took aim at political opponents, and shared positive developments on the stalled projects.

Karimabad Underpass Opening Date:

Mayor Wahab stated that the Karimabad (Meena Bazaar) underpass is expected to open by the end of January 2026. He said it will help address long-standing utility and traffic problems in the area.

Regarding the BRT Red Line, the mayor called it one of Karachi’s most challenging infrastructure projects. He added that major hurdles have now been cleared and construction is moving at a fast pace, promising citizens encouraging news on its completion soon.

The mayor also emphasized the importance of Shahrah-e-Bhutto, calling it a key route not just for Karachi but for the entire country, as it will link the city’s traffic with national highways.

Concluding his remarks, Mayor Wahab said Karachi’s development depends on practical work rather than political slogans. He asserted that only the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is addressing citizens’ problems, questioning whether city funds are being used for development or diverted to billboards and protests.

Earlier this year, in July, Mayor Wahab had inspected the Karimabad underpass and announced that it would be inaugurated on September 30, noting that heavy rains could delay the project by 7 to 10 days.

The Karimabad underpass, launched by Caretaker Chief Minister Maqbool Baqar in June 2023 under the supervision of the Karachi Development Authority with funding from the Government of Sindh, was originally scheduled to be completed in 24 months.

However, slow funding from the provincial government to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has caused significant delays, as reported by Dawn News.
