Thunderstorms, heavy rainfall expected till Aug 22: Met office

KARACHI: The Meteorological Department has forecast that a strong monsoon system will remain active across the country from today (Monday) until August 22.

According to the weather office, the spell is expected to bring rain to several districts of Sindh, including Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Tando Muhammad Khan, Thatta, Sujawal, Tharparkar, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Larkano, Qambar Shahdadkot, Ghotki, Sukkur, Kashmore, Naushahro Feroz, Dadu, Mirpur Khas and Shaheed Benazirabad.

Rain accompanied by thunderstorms has also been predicted in Karachi this evening. The Met Office has warned that heavy downpours with strong winds could hit different parts of the province.

Officials cautioned that the intense rainfall may trigger urban flooding in low-lying areas of Sindh during the spell, which is expected to last till August 22 with short breaks in between.

In the last 24 hours, Tharparkar’s Diplo recorded the highest rainfall at 116mm, followed by Kaloi with 58mm, Dalhi 21mm, Chhore 16mm, Padidan 15mm, Mithi 10mm and Badin 6mm. Parts of Karachi, including Gulshan-e-Maymar, also received showers last night.
