Punjab Police to crack down on illegal number plates

The Lahore City Traffic Police has launched a citywide drive targeting vehicles with fake, decorative, or non-standard number plates. Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Dr. Athar Waheed announced that a three-day awareness campaign will precede the start of strict enforcement.

CTO Waheed stated that from Friday onward, legal cases will be filed against those using unauthorized plates. However, during the three-day awareness period, vehicle owners spotted with such plates will receive warnings instead of fines.

“The purpose of this initial campaign is to spread awareness among citizens and give them an opportunity to comply with regulations before legal action is taken,” said Waheed.

He added that the operation won’t stop at drivers, those involved in making fake number plates will also face action.

CTO Waheed cautioned that modifying or tampering with license plates to dodge electronic fines is a serious crime and would be treated as such.

The traffic police have advised all vehicle owners to switch to officially approved number plates, both to avoid legal trouble and to help improve the city’s traffic law enforcement.
