Punjab imposes section 144 for Muharram security

To ensure peace and security during Muharram, the Punjab Home Department has announced that Section 144 will be enforced across the province from January 1 to 10.

According to a notification issued on Saturday, the move aims to curb any potentially provocative activities during the holy days. Strict security measures will be in place to prevent sectarian conflict.

A department spokesperson said no new religious processions or gatherings will be allowed during this time. Additionally, public display of weapons, even if licensed, has been completely banned.

“Section 144 will prohibit any speeches, slogans, or gestures that may incite religious or sectarian sentiments,” including content shared through social media, loudspeakers, or printed materials that promote hatred.

Pillion riding will also be banned on the 9th and 10th of Muharram across Punjab, though senior citizens, women, and law enforcement personnel will be exempt.

Temporary structures and marquees on rooftops along procession routes are not allowed, and authorities have banned the stockpiling of objects like bricks, bottles, or stones that could be used to disrupt processions.

“Spectators will not be allowed to gather on rooftops or in front of shops along procession routes,” the spokesperson added.

The government has urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement, warning that strict action will be taken against anyone who breaks the rules.

All these measures, excluding the limited pillion-riding ban, will stay in effect throughout the first ten days of Muharram.
