Pakistan faces extreme heatwave during Eid holidays, says PMD

Intense heatwaves are expected to continue across Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and many regions of Pakistan during Eid-ul-Azha and the following week, with temperatures rising significantly above normal.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reports that continental air is dominating most areas, and a strong high-pressure system is expected to develop on June 7, intensifying across the country by June 8.

As a result, daytime temperatures in the northern half of Pakistan, including central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, are likely to range from 5°C to 7°C above the seasonal average.

In the southern regions, such as upper and central Sindh, southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan, temperatures could rise by 4°C to 6°C above normal from June 7 to 12.

Islamabad can expect highs of 39°C to 41°C on Saturday, climbing to 40°C to 42°C by Tuesday. Rawalpindi will likely see highs of 36°C to 38°C on Saturday and 37°C to 39°C on Tuesday.

Over the past 24 hours, much of the country experienced hot and dry conditions, particularly in the plains. Sibbi stood out as the hottest location, with temperatures reaching a scorching 47°C, while Nawabshah and Nokkundi each recorded 45°C.

In the capital, Islamabad reached a high of 36°C, with morning humidity at 35 percent. Rawalpindi recorded a peak of 35°C, with evening humidity at 33 percent.
