His post came shortly after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) disclosed the 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy and the tri-nation series against New Zealand and South Africa, with his name missing despite his impressive domestic performances.

Imam last played an ODI in the 2023 World Cup in India, after which he was dropped. His most recent international match was in December 2023, when he played a Test against Australia in Melbourne, scoring just 22 runs across two innings.

Following his omission, Imam returned to domestic cricket and shined in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2024-25 while representing Multan Region.

His consistent performances earned him the captaincy of Pakistan Shaheens against the visiting West Indies side, raising hopes for his return to the national squad. However, the selectors decided to leave him out once again.

His elimination has surprised many, but it appears the selectors have placed their faith in Fakhar Zaman and Usman Khan to partner with Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan at the top of the order.

The pace attack will be led by Shaheen Shah Afridi, supported by Mohammad Hasnain, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf.

The squad includes only one specialist spinner, Abrar Ahmed, with Agha Salman and Khushdil Shah providing additional spin options.

The selected squad will also compete in the tri-nation series featuring New Zealand and South Africa, serving as preparation for the Champions Trophy.

The tournament kicks off on February 19, with Pakistan playing New Zealand in Karachi. The highly anticipated clash between Pakistan and India is scheduled for February 23 in Dubai.
