KPK weather update: Rain, thunderstorms and snowfall expected

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) is set to experience rain accompanied by thunderstorms, with a drop in temperatures across several districts, according to the meteorological department.

While most parts of the province will continue to experience dry and cold conditions, winter is expected to increase in the upper regions.

Weather experts predict that areas such as Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Malakand, and the Hazara Division will see rainfall along with thunderstorms.

Similarly, Mansehra, Kohistan, Battagram, Mohmand, Bajaur, and Kurram are also likely to receive precipitation.

Additionally, snowfall is expected in the province’s hilly regions, which could potentially affect travel conditions.

Over the past 24 hours, Lower Dir recorded the highest rainfall at 11mm, followed by Kalam with 9mm, Mir Khani with 7mm, and Drosh with 6mm.

Chitral and Malam Jabba each received 3mm, while Kakol recorded 2mm. Light rain was also reported in Swat’s Saidu Sharif and Takht Bhai, with 1mm of rainfall.

Snowfall was observed in higher altitudes, with Kalam receiving 5 inches and Malam Jabba recording 1 inch.

Authorities have advised residents to take precautions against the cold, while travelers heading to higher elevations should remain alert for possible roadblocks due to snowfall.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had earlier forecasted that a rain-bearing system would enter Pakistan between January 31 and February 1, bringing relief from the ongoing dry spell and a slight drop in temperatures.

In Punjab, dry conditions have persisted, causing temperatures to gradually rise. However, light rain is expected in Lahore and several districts in upper Punjab, which could provide a temporary cooling effect.

The anticipated rainfall is likely to bring back some winter chill, easing the warmth of the afternoons.

Meteorologists warn that climate change has shortened winter this year, leading to unusually warm days and colder nights.

Lahore recorded a minimum temperature of 7°C today, with the maximum expected to reach 24°C.
