ASP Sheherbano shared screenshots of the foul messages and insults she was targeted within her inbox. She claims she experienced cyber-bullying after the PGC rape incident.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Sheherbano Naqvi declared that she had been receiving threatening messages and experienced bullying over social media after entitling the Punjab College rape incident as fake news.

After an inaugural enquiry, the  ASP recorded a video statement on Monday with the victim’s father and uncle, deeming the incident as “propaganda” and “misinformation.”

The female police officer, who made headlines after saving the girl from a mob in Lahore’s Icchra Bazar, also faced criticism for invalidating the matter of a sexual assault on the premises of Punjab College ever taking place.

She took to her Instagram account to speak about the cyberbullying she endured from individuals who accused her of lying or concealing the rape of a female student.

“Most of the hate messages were from women,” Sheherbano  highlighted that many comments were “offensive.”

She condemned the mentality of people who, “from behind a screen, believe they have the right to ridicule anyone,” enumerating that “this kind of apathy is scary.”

In continuous posts on her Instagram stories, she showed screenshots of the offensive messages she received in her inbox.

The majority of the messages had the use of foul language, accusing her of disfiguring facts to hide the rape incident.

The news of the ostensible rape went viral on social media, with various accounts claiming that a security guard sexually assaulted a fist year intermediate student in the basement of Punjab College Campus 10 in Lahore’s Gulberg area.

The spread of many videos and explanations linked to the incident has divided the internet, with some calling the unrest the result of fake news about the rape. In contrast, others sided with expressing doubt about the government’s education of the incident.

Despite clarifications and promises about the ongoing soundings into the widespread fake news on social media, students in various cities across Punjab refused to back down and determinately continued their protests against the alleged rape incident.
