ISLAMABAD: In a major development, the long-standing ban on new domestic gas connections has been lifted, bringing relief and fresh hope to many households and businesses.
This shift is being seen as a significant step forward, particularly as energy needs continue to grow with urban expansion.
After years of delay, consumers can now apply for new gas connections, which will be linked to a more dependable and modern LNG-based supply system.
According to sources, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has already presented a detailed plan to the federal government for launching LNG-based connections.
The plan includes clear measures to maintain transparency, secure investments, and protect the interests of all stakeholders.
Here’s how the new gas connections will work:
- Security Deposit: Applicants will need to make a one-time deposit to secure their connection to the LNG supply network.
- Tariff Agreement: New users will sign an affidavit agreeing to the current LNG tariffs.
- Legal Commitment: Applicants must also promise not to dispute LNG pricing, ensuring long-term policy stability.
These new connections will be provided through the existing SNGPL infrastructure, but only in areas that are already connected to the LNG distribution network.
However, the government is working to expand this network quickly in response to rising demand.
Experts see this as a major shift in Pakistan’s energy strategy. With local natural gas reserves depleting, tapping into the global LNG market offers a more sustainable and future-ready solution.
This policy aims to energize homes, boost economic activity, and support broader reforms in the energy sector.
Detailed instructions and rollout plans will be shared by the Ministry of Energy in the coming days.
For now, residents in housing societies already linked to the LNG network can expect gas supply soon, and many others hope their areas will be added next.
