Deputy Inspector-General of Police Faisal Kamran announced on Saturday that the sale of kites in Lahore will begin on Sunday, February 1, 2026, according to a report.
He said police operations against violations of the Anti-Kite Flying Act are ongoing. So far, 1,237 people have been arrested and 1,316 cases have been registered under the law. Among those detained, 197 were involved in selling kites, while 1,152 were arrested for kite flying or possession of illegal string.
Police have also seized around 81,000 kites and 1,422 reels during these operations. The DIG added that Lahore will be sealed off on the eve of the Basant Festival to maintain law and order.
He made it clear that all types of metal strings are strictly prohibited, and there is a complete ban on nylon, chemical-coated, and mirror-made strings. Anyone found violating the Anti-Kite Flying Act will face imprisonment ranging from three to five years along with a fine of Rs2 million.
DIG Faisal Kamran further stated that from February 1, 2026, kites will only be sold through government-registered shops. Kite flying will be permitted for three days, from February 6 to February 8, 2026.
He also mentioned that traffic police are fitting motorcycles with safety rods to protect riders. Urging the public to follow the law, the DIG advised citizens to celebrate Basant responsibly, adding that authorities are fully committed to ensuring public safety during the festival.
