The School Education Department plans to introduce a teacher licensing system in 2026, requiring all government and private school teachers to obtain a professional teaching license.
Officials said a summary seeking Provincial Cabinet approval will be submitted soon. Under the new framework, contract teachers will only have their contracts extended if they successfully acquire a teaching license.
Candidates will need to pass a licensing exam to qualify, with the Punjab Examination Commission (PEC/PECTA) responsible for conducting the tests.
The department emphasized that the licensing system is designed to raise teaching standards, improve classroom learning, and ensure professional competence among teachers across the province.
