KARACHI: The Meteorological Department on Monday predicted windy and dry weather in the city, with gusts expected to reach speeds between 25 and 35 kilometers per hour as a tropical depression remains active over the Arabian Sea.
Due to the dry winds, the humidity level is likely to stay around 23%, the weather report stated.
With the changing weather, Karachi’s air quality has deteriorated. The Air Quality Index recorded the city’s particulate matter at 167, placing it in the “poor” category.
“Karachi has been ranked the fourth most polluted city in the world on the air quality index.”
According to an alert issued by the Met Office on Sunday, the tropical depression over the eastern Arabian Sea was located about 936 kilometers south-southeast of Karachi and around 700 kilometers west-southwest of Mumbai, India.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department’s cyclone warning centre in Karachi said it is closely monitoring the system and confirmed that there is currently no threat to any coastal area of Pakistan.
Earlier in October, a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea intensified into a depression approximately 440 kilometres south of Karachi, resulting in high waves and rough sea conditions along Sindh’s coastline.
That system later developed into a severe cyclonic storm named ‘Shakhti’, which moved across the west-central and northwestern parts of the Arabian Sea.
