Kartarpur Gurdwara drowns in Punjab floods

Severe flooding in Punjab has drowned the historic Kartarpur Gurdwara, leaving nearly 200 to 300 people stranded in the area.

The Pakistan Army has launched rescue operations to evacuate those trapped after floodwaters entered the shrine.

Officials said the flooding began after a protective dam of the Ravi River near Kartarpur collapsed, forcing the closure of the Narowal–Shakargarh road and cutting off key access routes.

The breach at Bheko Chak was caused by a massive surge in the Ravi, where water flow at Kot Ninan in Shakargarh crossed 250,000 cusecs.

Several areas, including Bheko Chak, Nowshera, Nowgaza, Mandikhel, Bhajna, and the Kartarpur Main Highway, have since gone underwater.

The Pakistan Army, working in conjunction with the local administration, is conducting relief and evacuation efforts to relocate families to safer areas.

Flooding has also intensified in the Chenab River, with Marala recording an inflow of 769,000 cusecs and an outflow of 762,000 cusecs.

At Khanki, flows have risen to 755,000 cusecs, while the Ravi River at Jasar is also at dangerous levels.

At Shahdara, the Ravi recorded 72,000 cusecs, while Baloki Headworks registered 79,000 cusecs inflow and 67,000 cusecs outflow. Further downstream, Ganda Singh Wala reported 245,000 cusecs, and Sulemanki 100,000 cusecs.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and cooperate with rescue teams, warning that further rainfall is expected in the coming days.
