Pakistan’s aviation sector took a significant step forward on Monday with the official launch of South Air, a new domestic airline aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and providing more affordable travel options across the country.
At the inaugural ceremony, Chairman of the Senate Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani described the launch as a “historic step,” emphasizing that the airline would connect smaller and underserved cities in South Punjab, interior Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He highlighted that improved air links would support local development, provide better access to essential services, and promote national unity.
South Air’s first flight is scheduled from Karachi to Multan, with plans to expand to additional destinations as the airline grows. Gilani also shared his personal connection to Multan and noted that the new carrier could boost confidence in the region’s economic and cultural potential.
He urged the airline’s management to maintain affordable fares so that travelers from all income groups, including lawmakers, could benefit.
The ceremony was attended by South Air executives, legislators, and business leaders, who expressed optimism that the airline would stimulate economic activity and offer more convenient domestic travel options for passengers nationwide.
