Karachi’s crumbling roads are set for a major overhaul after Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah approved Rs25 billion for repairs and fresh carpeting across the city.
During a meeting at the CM House, he instructed authorities to begin work immediately, highlighting that deteriorating roads are worsening traffic congestion and must be addressed without delay.
Officials informed the chief minister that 315 internal streets need urgent repair, and he approved the full package while emphasizing that drainage and sewerage systems should be integrated into the reconstruction to prevent future damage during monsoon seasons.
The plan also covers the reconstruction of 60 major arteries, which will be developed alongside essential utility work to avoid repeated digging and ensure long-lasting roads.
Officials briefed the chief minister on ongoing mega projects, noting that the Korangi Causeway Bridge is over 80 percent complete and expected to open by late 2025 or early 2026.
The 39-kilometer Shahrah-e-Bhutto Expressway is about 78 percent finished, with several sections already operational, while the 22-kilometer Port Qasim–M9 link road is underway and likely to open by the end of 2025.
Additionally, the long-delayed Kareemabad Underpass, now 85 percent complete, is scheduled for completion this year. The chief minister stressed that the coordinated rollout of these projects will ease traffic and improve urban mobility across Karachi.
