Cooking oil, ghee prices increase sharply across Pakistan

Prices of ghee and cooking oil have surged sharply across Pakistan, adding more strain to households already struggling with inflation.

Market figures show that premium brands of ghee and cooking oil have gone up by Rs10, now selling at Rs582 per litre or kilogram, while the second-tier category is priced around Rs540 per litre or kilogram.

Consumers say the latest increase has made it even tougher to balance household budgets as inflation continues to bite.

Sugar prices have also climbed by Rs2, bringing the retail rate to Rs179 per kilogram.

Experts link the price hike to rising global commodity costs and ongoing supply chain challenges, cautioning that further fluctuations may occur if import expenses remain high.

At the same time, tomato prices have soared dramatically, now ranging between Rs500 and Rs700 per kilogram, compared to the official rate of Rs368.

Retailers attribute this sharp rise to limited supply and transport delays, particularly after disruptions along major trade routes. The steepest prices have been reported in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Burns Road areas.

Frustrated consumers across major cities say the constant surge in food prices has made daily life increasingly difficult.
