Fresh monsoon rains expected in Karachi from Aug 24: PMD

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert warning of heavy rains in Karachi and Hyderabad from August 24 to 28, raising the risk of urban flooding, power breakdowns, and disruptions to essential services.

According to the advisory, Hyderabad is likely to see intense showers with thunder and lightning, which could trigger flooding in low-lying areas, while Karachi is expected to receive heavy rainfall starting Thursday night.

Authorities have urged citizens to stay cautious, avoid flooded streets, keep away from electric poles, handle appliances carefully, and ensure drainage systems are cleared to minimize waterlogging.

Families in vulnerable areas have also been advised to prepare emergency kits with water, food, flashlights, and first aid supplies.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) noted that the recent rain spell in Karachi, which lasted three days, would weaken by Friday with only light morning showers.

However, a new monsoon system is set to enter Sindh on August 27. “The new weather system is likely to bring rain to Karachi and other parts of the province through August 30,” a Met Office spokesperson stated.
