ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has shared troubling figures about the widespread destruction caused by recent monsoon rains and floods throughout the country, as per the report on Friday.
The NDMA stated that between June 26 and July 17, a total of 178 people lost their lives in various rain-related incidents, while 491 others were injured.
Punjab was the worst-hit province, with 103 reported deaths. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa followed with 38 fatalities, Sindh recorded 20, and Balochistan reported 16.
Just in the last 24 hours, 54 people have died, and 227 more sustained injuries in weather-related incidents across different regions.
The NDMA pointed out that flash floods have been the main cause behind the high number of deaths, though building collapses and other rain-triggered accidents have also played a significant role in the rising toll.
Meanwhile, heavy rains soaked cities across Pakistan, offering relief from the recent heatwave but bringing their own challenges.
Rawalpindi, in particular, faced serious disruptions as the downpour caused severe flooding, leading authorities to announce a local public holiday across the district.
Floodwaters have filled the city’s streets, leaving many areas submerged. The rising levels in the Nullah Leh canal have forced officials to issue evacuation alerts for residents living in flood-prone neighborhoods.
Water at Gawalmandi and Katarian bridges has reached critical levels, and with the situation worsening, authorities are on high alert as the possibility of mass evacuations appears.
