Floods cause estimated Rs822 billion loss across Pakistan: report

ISLAMABAD: The recent floods have caused an estimated loss of Rs822 billion across Pakistan, according to an initial government report cited on Friday.

Official documents show that the floods inflicted heavy damage to the country’s agriculture and infrastructure sectors, leading to massive economic losses.

The report added that the government has sought help from development partners to assess the full extent of the destruction caused by the disaster.

Nearly 6.5 million people across 70 districts were affected, with Punjab suffering the most due to river overflows in the Sutlej, Chenab, and Ravi.

In Punjab alone, 27 districts saw severe damage to farmland and residential areas. Nationwide, around 229,763 houses were destroyed or damaged, while 1,037 people lost their lives and 1,067 were injured.

According to the report, the federal government has provided Rs2 million in compensation to the families of each deceased individual.

Earlier, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) warned that the recent floods could increase inflation and slow down Pakistan’s economic recovery.

In its Asian Development Outlook, the ADB noted that natural disasters like floods pose a serious threat to Pakistan’s economic stability and growth prospects.

The report projected GDP growth at around 3% for FY2026, with inflation expected to average 6% due to supply chain disruptions, rising food prices, and higher gas tariffs.
