Deadly downpours paralyze Punjab, 63 reported dead

At least 63 lives were lost in rain-related incidents across Punjab during the past 36 hours, as relentless downpours disrupted life in multiple cities.

In Lahore, three people died after a house roof collapsed in Akbari Gate, while a mother and daughter were killed in a similar incident in Faisalabad’s Iqbal Colony.

In Chiniot, rainfall brought down electric poles and wires onto railway tracks, halting train services.

In the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, heavy rain caused widespread flooding. Rawalpindi received a record 220 millimeters of rain, while Chakwal experienced a powerful cloudburst with 425 millimeters falling in a short time.

Flooding affected drains and low-lying areas, submerging roads, including those near Murree Road and Rawalpindi Cantonment.

Authorities issued flood alerts, with sirens sounding across the region, and more rain is expected in the coming hours.

The situation in Chakwal and Jhelum worsened as dozens of villages were inundated by monsoon flooding. A cloudburst in Chakwal caused widespread destruction, cutting off several villages from the city.

Two deaths were reported, and flash floods swept away the Panwal Dam. The local government requested military assistance as emergency relief efforts continued across submerged regions including Talla Gang, Kallar Kahar, and Choa Syedan Shah.

In Jhelum, army personnel launched rescue operations in areas affected by the Ghan nullah’s overflow, successfully evacuating 29 people trapped by the floods.
