Ruet-e-Hilal committee to meet for Zilhajj moon sighting

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet in Karachi on Sunday to sight the moon for Zilhajj 1447 AH.

According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the meeting will take place on May 17 at the Meteorological Department office in Karachi. Chairman of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, will preside over the session, while zonal moon sighting committee meetings will also be held in provincial capitals.

Separate meetings of zonal committees are scheduled in Lahore, Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar. The Ministry of Religious Affairs has issued an official notification regarding these meetings.

If the Zilhajj moon is sighted on May 17, Eidul Azha will be observed on Wednesday, May 27. However, if the moon is not sighted, Eid will fall on Thursday, May 28.

Earlier on May 12, the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) released its forecast for the Zilhajj 1447 AH moon sighting and predicted that Eidul Azha is likely to be celebrated on May 27.

According to SUPARCO, the new moon of Zilhajj 1447 AH is expected to be born on May 17, 2026, at 1:01am Pakistan Standard Time (PST). The agency stated that by sunset on May 17, the moon’s age would be around 18 hours and 30 minutes.

SUPARCO further said that the coastal areas of Pakistan are expected to have a gap of nearly 60 minutes between sunset and moonset.

Based on these astronomical details, the commission said the chances of sighting the Zilhajj moon on the evening of May 17 are favourable, provided weather conditions remain clear and visibility near the horizon is good.

According to the forecast, 1st Zilhajj 1447 Hijri is expected to fall on Monday, May 18, 2026.
