Schools to remain closed for two days due to torrential rains

All government and private schools in Azad Jammu and Kashmir will remain closed on August 15 and 16, 2025, due to heavy rains and the risk of flooding and landslides.

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Elementary and Secondary Education Department issued a notification stating, “Secretary Elementary and Secondary Education has approved the closure of all government and private educational institutions in Azad Kashmir on August 15, 16, 2025.”

The decision was made in light of the threat posed by overflowing rivers and drains during the ongoing spell of severe weather.

Earlier, the Elementary and Secondary Education Department in Poonch had already announced a holiday for August 15, citing dangerous weather conditions.

In Haveli, Assistant Commissioner Sarfraz Shad also confirmed that “due to bad weather conditions and landslides, all educational institutions, both government and private, in the Jhelum Valley district will remain closed on August 15.”

These measures follow a series of devastating cloudbursts across Azad Kashmir that have caused extensive damage, sweeping away bridges, cutting off roads, and destroying homes.

The impact of the torrential rains has been severe. In Naseerabad tehsil of Muzaffarabad, a flash flood triggered by a cloudburst claimed the lives of six members of the same family.

In Bagh, rivers and streams have overflowed due to relentless downpours, while Bhimber Nullah in Samahni is experiencing dangerously high flood levels.
