Govt announces Rs13,000 cash support for low-income families

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday unveiled a Rs38 billion Ramazan Relief Package aimed at supporting deserving families across the four provinces, as well as Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking at the launch ceremony of the PM Ramazan Package 2026, the prime minister said the financial assistance would be delivered digitally to 1.21 million families without any discrimination. Under the initiative, each eligible family will receive Rs13,000 through a digital wallet or direct bank transfer.

Of the total Rs38 billion allocation, Rs10 billion has been set aside for families already enrolled in the government’s Kafalat program.

The prime minister said the government has done away with the old distribution system that operated through utility stores and has introduced a digital mechanism to promote transparency and safeguard the dignity of beneficiaries. He pointed out that previous relief packages often led to long queues and complaints about the quality of items provided.

He also admitted that shifting to a digital model comes with challenges, particularly in coordinating with banks and moving toward a cashless system. The State Bank of Pakistan has introduced a framework to ensure that the funds are disbursed transparently and securely. The government, he added, will continue to monitor the process regularly.
