Punjab imposes heavy fines for 8 traffic violations

The Punjab government has updated the Motor Vehicle Act, introducing heavy fines for a variety of traffic violations to strengthen road safety enforcement.

Drivers causing air pollution or emitting smoke will now face fines of Rs5,000 for motorcycles, Rs10,000 for cars and jeeps, Rs15,000 for public service vehicles (PSVs), and Rs20,000 for heavy transport vehicles (HTVs).

Parking in no-parking zones will result in penalties of Rs2,000 for motorcycles, Rs10,000 for cars and jeeps, Rs15,000 for PSVs, and Rs20,000 for HTVs. Throwing garbage from moving vehicles will carry the same fines.

Drivers not wearing seatbelts will be fined Rs10,000 for cars and jeeps, Rs15,000 for PSVs, and Rs20,000 for HTVs. Underage drivers face the highest penalties: Rs25,000 for motorcycles, Rs30,000 for cars and jeeps, Rs50,000 for PSVs, and Rs100,000 for HTVs.

Using a mobile phone while driving will attract fines of Rs5,000 for motorcycles, Rs10,000 for cars and jeeps, Rs15,000 for PSVs, and Rs20,000 for HTVs.

Motorcycles carrying more than two passengers will be fined Rs5,000. Parking on footpaths or blocking main roads will also result in fines of Rs2,000 for motorcycles, Rs10,000 for cars and jeeps, Rs15,000 for PSVs, and Rs20,000 for HTVs.

The new fines aim to encourage responsible driving, improve road discipline, and reduce traffic accidents across Punjab.
