PMDC announces 5% increase in annual tuition fee for medical and dental colleges

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has fixed Rs1.89 million as the maximum annual tuition fee for medical and dental colleges for the 2025–26 academic year, marking a 5% increase from last year’s limit of Rs1.8 million.

According to the notification issued under the PMDC Act 2022, the current cap of Rs1.8 million for 2024–25 will rise by 5% for the upcoming session. Starting from 2026–27, annual fee adjustments will be linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate.

The revised fee structure was proposed by the Medical Education Committee set up by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The PMDC has directed all private medical and dental colleges to publicly display their approved fee structures at least three months before the start of admissions, in line with Section 20(7) of the PMDC Act.

Institutions charging or advertising fees beyond the approved limit will face strict disciplinary action, including suspension of accreditation, student intake, or other legal penalties under Section 33 of the Act.

Background

Concerns over rising tuition fees first emerged last year when parents complained about sharp hikes. The Senate Standing Committee on Health intervened after PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui repeatedly raised the issue.

In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formed a committee headed by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar to review and rationalize the fee structure.

Following the review, the PMDC capped annual tuition at Rs1.8 million for 2024–25, a ceiling that has now been increased by 5% for the next academic session.
