Naanbai’s associations have warned that roti and naan prices will rise sharply unless flour is provided at government-controlled rates.
The associations stressed the need for a steady and sufficient supply of flour at official prices, warning that otherwise roti could reach Rs25 and naan Rs30.
They noted that flour prices have surged nearly 70% in the last two weeks and said they would launch nationwide protests if the issue is not addressed.
Market sources reported a steep jump in wheat prices, with rates in Punjab climbing from Rs2,200 to Rs2,800 per maund, adding to inflation concerns.
The price of a 20kg flour bag has already increased by Rs100, prompting naanbais to earlier hint at a Rs2 hike in roti rates.
In the twin cities and nearby areas, the sale of 15kg flour bags has been banned as prices continue to soar. Flour mills are selling a 20kg bag for Rs2,400 against the official rate of Rs1,810, while a 10kg bag is being sold at Rs1,200 compared to the notified price of Rs905.
At the same time, fine flour has seen a steep rise, with an 80kg sack now costing Rs10,500 instead of Rs7,000.
