Rs12bn Hub Canal damaged weeks after inauguration, Karachi water supply suspended

KARACHI: Karachi’s water supply was disrupted after a section of the newly built Hub Canal was damaged by flash floods triggered by heavy rains in the city’s drainage system.

The canal, constructed for Rs12 billion and inaugurated only a month ago, has suffered a 20-metre breach near the Northern Bypass.

A Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) spokesperson said, “The Hub Canal has been affected due to flash floods in the drainage system. Repair work will be completed soon.”

The canal was inaugurated on August 13 by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

Officials explained that floodwaters near the Northern Bypass struck both the old and new Hub Canals, causing severe damage and halting the water supply.

They further added that a Sui Gas pipeline passing over the canal had also been dislodged, worsening the damage.

Emergency repairs are underway and are expected to be completed within 36 hours. Until then, water supply to Karachi’s West, Central, and Keamari districts will remain suspended.

The KWSB has urged citizens to conserve water, assuring them that supply will resume as soon as the damaged section is restored.
