Punjab remains on high alert as Sutlej, Panjnad face high floods

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has said that the intensity of the monsoon has eased, and no major increase in river flows is expected in Punjab in the coming days.

The PDMA chief noted that the latest spell of rains in Punjab has ended, while the monsoon system over upper catchment areas has also subsided. Although heavy rainfall is not expected in the next week, flood conditions remain in several rivers.

The Sutlej continues to face severe pressure, with flows of 230,000 cusecs at Ganda Singh Wala and 137,000 cusecs at Sulemanki.

On the Chenab, water levels are at 62,000 cusecs at Marala and 98,000 cusecs at both Khanki and Qadirabad, while Trimmu is recording 250,000 cusecs. Panjnad, however, is experiencing extremely high floods with 475,000 cusecs.

The Ravi is flowing at 26,000 cusecs at Jassar, 31,000 cusecs at Shahdara, and 80,000 cusecs at Balloki, where a medium flood has been observed. At Sidhnai, levels have risen to 121,000 cusecs, placing it under the high flood category.

The PDMA added that all departments remain on high alert under orders from the Punjab Chief Minister, with continuous monitoring of river flows and mobilisation of resources to protect lives and property.

Meanwhile, Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain announced that the government will soon launch a special package for farmers in flood-hit areas to cover crop and livestock damages.

He said the plan includes tax relief on electricity bills, with the federal government covering subsidies and provinces waiving land revenue.
