The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has announced the end of the tenth and most destructive phase of this year’s monsoon season, bringing some relief to flood-hit areas, as per the report on Wednesday.
In its latest update, the PDMA said no major rainfall is expected over the next week, including in the upper catchment areas of Punjab’s main rivers.
Even with the drop in rainfall, river levels remain dangerously high, with several locations still facing severe flood conditions.
The Sutlej River is in high flood at Ganda Singh Wala with 230,000 cusecs and at Head Sulemanki with 137,000 cusecs.
On the Chenab, Head Marala is discharging 62,000 cusecs, Khanki Headworks is under low flood with 98,000 cusecs, and Trimmu is under strain with 250,000 cusecs.
The most critical situation is at the Panjnad River, where flows have surged to 475,000 cusecs, the highest across the province.
Meanwhile, the Ravi River is showing mixed levels: Jassar at 26,000 cusecs, Shahdara at 31,000 cusecs, Balloki under moderate flood with 80,000 cusecs, and Sidhnai facing a high flood with 121,000 cusecs.
The PDMA said that with the monsoon system weakening and no significant upstream rains forecast, further rise in river levels is unlikely. However, authorities remain on high alert to protect people and property.
