KARACHI: Water supply to several parts of Karachi will be reduced or suspended for four days starting Monday as repair work begins on a major 84-inch main water line, the Karachi Water and Sanitation Corporation (KWSC) said on Sunday.
A KWSC spokesperson said a leakage was found in the Phase-I 84-inch main line in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 19.
The corporation has decided to carry out urgent repairs to fix the leakages and stabilise the city’s water system, particularly ahead of Ramazan.
The repair work is scheduled to start at 12 noon on Monday and is expected to take 96 hours. Specialised technical teams will remain on site throughout the operation.
To facilitate the repairs, water supply from Dhabeji will be temporarily reduced, leading to a shortfall of about 200 million gallons per day (MGD).
Karachi normally receives around 650 MGD of water, but during the repair period, supply is expected to drop to around 450 MGD, the KWSC spokesperson said.
Water supply from Hub, Gharo, and other pumping stations will continue as usual without any interruption.
Due to the reduced supply, areas including Clifton, DHA, Korangi, Malir, Landhi, Shah Faisal, Gulshan, Jinnah, Chanesar, Saddar, and Lyari are likely to face water shortages. The Landhi and Sherpao hydrants will also remain closed during the repair work.
The spokesperson added that once the repairs are complete, the city’s water transmission system will improve and the longstanding leakage issues will be resolved. He urged residents to use water carefully during this period.
Meanwhile, sources claimed that under the pretext of repair work, water supply to a large part of the city would remain heavily affected.
Earlier on Thursday, a power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station caused Line No5 of the MS system and Line No2 of the PRC system to burst, disrupting water supply to several areas.
K-Electric later repaired Line No5, and water supply to the city resumed after the restoration.
