Sutlej River in high flood after India releases more water

India has released more water into the Sutlej River, raising fears of fresh flooding, with a high flood alert issued downstream of Harike and Ferozepur barrages, according to the report on Monday.

The Indian High Commissioner formally notified Islamabad of the situation at 8:00 am today, following an earlier alert issued yesterday.

Floodwaters, after wreaking havoc in central Punjab, are now passing through south Punjab and moving toward the Guddu Barrage in Sindh via the Punjnad headworks.

At Trimmu Barrage, the flow is recorded at 543,579 cusecs, while Head Punjnad is facing a severe flood with 564,604 cusecs.

According to the Flood Forecasting Division, Punjab’s rivers are experiencing dangerously high levels. The Ravi is in high flood at Sidhnai with 123,168 cusecs and is also swelling at Shahdara and Balloki.

In the Chenab, flows have surged to 543,000 cusecs at Head Trimmu, with 145,000 cusecs each at Head Khanki and Qadirabad.

The most alarming situation remains at the Sutlej, where 319,000 cusecs are reported at Ganda Singh Wala and 564,000 cusecs at Head Panjnad.
