Punjab announces loans to renovate old and unsafe houses

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has expanded the “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” (ACAG) program by introducing interest-free loans for home repairs and the construction of additional floors.

Under the revised scheme, eligible homeowners can receive up to Rs500,000 to renovate damaged or unsafe houses. Those planning to build an extra floor on their existing homes can apply for interest-free loans of up to Rs1 million.

The announcement was made during a review meeting, where the chief minister said the expansion aims to help families avoid accidents caused by unsafe buildings, referring to the recent building collapse in Kahna.

Officials at the meeting shared that interest-free loans have already been approved for more than 180,000 families. The Punjab government has allocated Rs217.8 billion for the housing initiative, while over 134,000 homes have been completed so far. Thousands of additional houses are currently under construction across the province.
