Customs Enforcement Karachi has confiscated smuggled mobile phones worth Rs96 million along with a tampered Toyota Prado that had been altered to hide the goods, reported on Sunday.
The Federal Board of Revenue said the vehicle was stopped during an operation when officers detected irregularities during inspection.
During the initial check, officials noticed suspicious welding marks on the bonnet, front bumper, and side fender, prompting a detailed technical review.
They later found five specially built hidden compartments inside the vehicle, which were used to smuggle high-value items.
From these sections, customs teams recovered 564 mobile phones, including Google Pixel and Motorola sets.
A forensic audit later confirmed that the Prado had been modified and was not duty-paid, thereby strengthening the grounds for seizure under the Customs Act 1969 and the import rules.
The FBR added that an FIR has been lodged and investigations have begun to trace the larger smuggling network involved.
Authorities believe the inquiry will lead to more arrests and additional recoveries as the case progresses.
