Major power outage hits several areas of Karachi

A major power outage affected several parts of Karachi late at night after more than 14 K-Electric grid stations went offline.

According to reports, the outage was caused by tripping on K-Electric’s high-tension network, disrupting electricity supply to several areas across the city.

The affected areas included Manghopir, Nazimabad, Khawaja Ajmer Nagri, Nusrat Bhutto Colony, Surjani Town, North Karachi, North Nazimabad, Defence, Orangi, Keamari, Sultanabad, PIDC, Hijrat Colony and Mauripur.

New Karachi, Lines Area, Lyari, Quaidabad and Gulshan-e-Hadeed were also affected. Electricity remained suspended in several localities for around 90 minutes before the supply gradually started to return.

A K-Electric spokesperson said the outage was caused by a brief fault in the Extra High Tension (EHT) network, which temporarily disrupted electricity transmission to several parts of the city.

The company said power had already been restored in some affected areas, while its teams were working to restore supply in the remaining localities. K-Electric said electricity remained normal in most parts of Karachi despite the temporary disruption.

K-Electric teams are continuing efforts to fix faults at the affected grid stations and on the high-tension network.
