Karachi announces heavy fines for traffic violations

The Sindh government has rolled out tough new traffic penalties in Karachi to improve road discipline, focusing particularly on one-way violations and unlicensed driving.

The decision came during a meeting led by Sindh Home and Law Minister Zia Lanjar, where several key amendments to the Motor Vehicles Rules were approved.

According to the new rules, any government vehicle found breaking one-way traffic laws will be fined Rs200,000, private cars will face Rs100,000, and motorcycles Rs25,000.

In addition, driving without a valid license will now cost Rs25,000 for motorcycles and Rs50,000 for cars.

The government has also made it compulsory for all commercial and non-commercial vehicles to undergo fitness certification by third-party agencies.

Furthermore, a total ban has been placed on four-seater rickshaws, while two-seaters will need official clearance before operating on the roads.

Additional safety steps include the mandatory installation of trackers and sensors in water tankers and dumpers, and at least five surveillance cameras in freight vehicles.

To deter risky stunts, one-wheeling and drifting will now carry heavy penalties: Rs. 100,000 for a first offense, Rs. 200,000 for a second, and Rs. 300,000 for a third.
