Karachi residents are preparing for colder nights this winter as Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) announced daily gas shutdowns for homes in Sindh from 10 pm to 5 am to cope with a worsening supply shortage.
According to Dawn News, the nighttime closures are part of SSGC’s seasonal load-management plan, following guidelines approved by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC).
Officials explained that the company is operating with much less gas than anticipated this year, forcing these adjustments.
A SSGC spokesperson said that while domestic load-shedding was not originally planned for Sindh or Balochistan, the sudden supply drop made the seven-hour nightly shutdown unavoidable to rebuild line-pack pressure for the next day’s household use.
The shortage will also impact transport users, with the CNG sector facing periodic weekly shutdowns as part of the conservation efforts to stretch limited resources through the winter.
SSGC has urged consumers to plan for the nightly gas gap and be ready for further changes as temperatures drop and demand rises.
