Electricity prices expected to drop in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Electricity users in Pakistan are likely to see some relief as power rates are expected to drop further, as reported on Monday.

According to the report, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking a reduction of Rs1.75 per unit in electricity prices under the quarterly adjustment for the last quarter of the fiscal year 2024-25.

NEPRA is set to review the request in a hearing on August 4, 2025. If the proposal gets approved, it will result in a collective relief of over Rs53.39 billion for consumers across the country.

The price adjustment will apply to all state-run power distribution companies (DISCOs), including K-Electric. Consumers could see the lower rates reflected in their electricity bills for August, September, and October 2025.

Moreover, if further revisions are approved for the following months, September, October, and November 2025, the total relief may go up to Rs2.10 per unit.

In a related update, K-Electric issued a clarification in response to rumours about a possible hike in electricity rates. The company stated that it has no authority to change power tariffs on its own.

K-Electric explained that all rates, unit charges, consumer categories, and slab structures are regulated by the Government of Pakistan under policies set by the Ministry of Energy (Power Division).

A spokesperson for K-Electric stressed that the company fully follows the official electricity tariff policy, which applies equally to all DISCOs across the country. Any change in rates or categories can only be made once a government notification is issued.
