US travel advisory warns of attack risks in Pakistan

The United States has advised its citizens in Pakistan to stay alert because of possible terrorist threats, including violent attacks and other security risks.

In a notice issued on Wednesday, the United States Department of State said that extremist groups may still be planning attacks across Pakistan, especially in Balochistan (Pakistan) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The advisory also mentioned that attacks have previously taken place in large cities such as Karachi and Islamabad.

The statement warned that “Terrorists may strike without warning. They target transportation hubs, hotels, markets, malls, military and security sites, airports, trains, schools, hospitals, places of worship, tourist spots, and government buildings.”US citizens were asked to avoid travelling to KP, Balochistan, and areas close to the Line of Control due to militant activity and increased military presence.

The advisory further said that people should avoid joining protests without official permission. It also noted that some US citizens have been detained for taking part in protests or sharing online content criticizing the Pakistani government, military, or officials.

Security arrangements are stronger in major cities, but crimes such as pickpocketing, bag snatching, and phone theft are still common. The US said its ability to provide help to its citizens is limited in KP, Balochistan, Azad Kashmir, and most areas outside Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. Government staff also need special permission to travel outside these main cities.

The warning was released amid tight security around diplomatic zones and consulates after violent clashes in Karachi on Sunday, where nine people were killed and more than twelve were injured when protests broke out outside the US Consulate.

The unrest followed the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the opening strike of a large-scale US and Israeli attack.
