Karachi authorities have decided to set up a separate lane for heavy vehicles after a rise in serious traffic accidents. Officials said the lane will have a speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour, and heavy vehicles will be required to remain within the designated route at all times.
The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi, which was attended by transporters, Additional IG Police Afzal Khan, the transport secretary, and the DIG Traffic.
During the discussion, issues faced by goods transporters were reviewed, including the lack of parking spaces, issuance of HTV licences, vehicle registration, and insurance matters.
Commissioner Naqvi instructed traffic police to take firm action to curb accidents and strictly enforce traffic rules. He also assured transporters that their concerns, including the provision of parking facilities, would be addressed where possible.
Under the plan, authorities will also re-examine the proposal for a goods transport terminal. A dedicated HTV lane will be marked from Mai Kolachi to Qayyumabad Bridge, with lane marking work set to begin right away. Once completed, heavy vehicles will be allowed to use only this specific lane along the route.
The meeting also reviewed suggestions to improve vehicle fitness inspections and strengthen insurance arrangements for vehicles and bus passengers.
