Punjab Police arrest 39,311 drug dealers across province

The Punjab government has stepped up its crackdown against major drug dealers and smugglers across the province as part of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s efforts to make Punjab drug-free.

Inspector General of Punjab Police Ali Ahsan Sahi has directed police officials to speed up action against those involved in drug trafficking and ensure that offenders are prosecuted and punished according to the law.

A Punjab Police spokesperson said that 39,311 drug dealers have been arrested across the province so far this year, with more than 40,000 cases registered against them.

Police operations have resulted in the seizure of 21,410 kilograms of cannabis, 1,653 kilograms of heroin, 1,399 kilograms of ice, 381 kilograms of opium and over 548,000 litres of liquor.

In Lahore, police arrested 5,887 suspected drug dealers and registered 5,676 cases during the year.

The crackdown in the city led to the recovery of 2,150 kilograms of cannabis, 107 kilograms of heroin, 685 kilograms of ice, 53 kilograms of opium and 25,417 litres of liquor.

The Punjab police chief also ordered authorities to take firm action against those involved in the online sale and distribution of drugs.

He directed police to step up efforts to trace major drug dealers and smugglers linked to wider trafficking networks and ensure that legal proceedings are initiated against them.
