Punjab CM approves solar charging stations for electric buses

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed that electric buses in the province be equipped with solar-powered charging to promote green public transport.

She inaugurated the Punjab Transport Company headquarters and the Electric Vehicle Command and Control Centre, inspecting the automated bus washing plant and fast-charging stations that can fully charge buses in 105 minutes using Yutong’s 160-kilowatt system.

Maryam Nawaz instructed officials to identify new routes for electric buses and prepare a timeline to add 1,500 more buses.

She also highlighted the importance of claiming carbon credits under the Green Bus Project and improving facilities for passengers, particularly women, children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.

The Punjab Transport Company has transported over 15.5 million passengers, including 3.8 million women and 1.5 million students.

Tuck shops at bus stations are providing business opportunities for widows and divorced women. Officials say the electric bus initiative is helping reduce pollution while offering safe, modern, and eco-friendly transport throughout Punjab.
