Light rain, drizzle forecast for Karachi today: PMD

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast light rain and drizzle in Karachi today (Thursday) as humid conditions continue in the city.

According to the Met Office, the weather will remain humid with partial cloud cover over the next 24 hours. The maximum temperature may rise to 36°C, while the minimum recorded was 26.9°C. The humidity level over the last 24 hours was 74%.

The light rain forecast follows a low-pressure system’s movement closer to the Arabian Sea in recent days, which had earlier raised concerns of a tropical cyclone. Heavy showers had already hit Karachi on Tuesday, briefly easing the heat.

In its latest update, the PMD clarified that the system, currently positioned over the northeastern Arabian Sea about 440 kilometres south of Karachi, is unlikely to develop into a cyclone and will likely weaken over the sea in the coming days.

As a precaution, fishermen in Sindh have been advised to avoid going into deep waters until tomorrow, though there is no immediate cyclone threat to the coast.

Moist currents from the Arabian Sea are also driving widespread rain and thunderstorms across southeastern Sindh, affecting Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Sujawal, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, and surrounding districts until October 2.
