Another European country shuts embassy in Pakistan

Finland has decided to close its embassy in Islamabad later this summer, according to a report. This comes shortly after the mission was reopened in 2022 following a ten-year break.

Sources at the Finnish embassy said it will continue working until a final closure date is announced. The decision has been linked to “strategic and operational reasons.”

Although Finland had only recently restored its diplomatic presence in Pakistan, it has now chosen to shut down operations again.

At present, the embassy provides limited consular services, as most visa and passport matters are already managed by other Finnish missions, including the one in Abu Dhabi.

This development follows a similar move by Sweden, which closed its embassy in Pakistan indefinitely in 2023 due to security concerns.

Finland has also decided to close its embassies in Afghanistan and Myanmar, citing the same “operational and strategic reasons.”

The Islamabad embassy will remain open for now, with officials yet to confirm the exact date of closure.
