Gwadar has officially become part of Pakistan’s livestock export sector, with the port city now sending regular shipments of donkey meat to China as part of efforts to expand and diversify agricultural exports, officials said.
Sources aware of the matter said that nearly 50 containers of processed donkey meat are being shipped every month from Gwadar to Chinese markets, where the product is commonly used in traditional medicine and certain specialty food industries.
Officials said the exports are being conducted under approved regulatory frameworks to meet international health and safety requirements.
The government believes the initiative will help open new sources of income, create jobs for local communities in Balochistan and further strengthen trade relations between Pakistan and China.
Economic activity is expected across several sectors, including livestock farming, meat processing, transportation, logistics and port operations.
By using Gwadar’s deep sea port and its strategic position along major regional trade routes, Pakistan aims to improve the global reach of its livestock industry and tap into niche international markets.
Authorities said the development highlights Gwadar’s expanding role not only as a transit and industrial hub but also as a key outlet for agricultural exports.
The move has prompted discussion among trade and agriculture stakeholders, who have stressed the need for clear regulations, sustainable livestock practices and value addition to ensure long term benefits.
Analysts say that although donkey meat exports cater to a limited market, the move reflects the government’s broader plan to widen Pakistan’s export base beyond traditional goods.
As Pakistan looks toward non traditional export opportunities, officials see Gwadar playing a central role in future trade diversification by connecting local producers with global markets through improved infrastructure and international cooperation.
