Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan faces further legal troubles after a local court ordered the seizure of his assets in the country.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziaduddin Rahman issued the order in a case related to a bounced cheque.

Shakib, who is also a member of the Awami League the party of fugitive former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was implicated in the matter.

In 2016, he set up a crab farm in Satkhira, Bangladesh, which ceased operations in 2021. The disputed cheques were meant to repay a loan taken by his company, but they bounced due to insufficient funds.

Reports indicate that Bangladesh Bank issued a legal notice about the bounced cheques in October 2024, leading to a case being filed against Shakib and three other company officials on December 24.

The court initially bid Shakib for a hearing on December 18 last year and later scheduled his appearance for January 19. However, he failed to attend, prompting the court to issue an arrest warrant against him in January.

Currently, Shakib is outside Bangladesh, reportedly due to death threats following political unrest and his affiliation with the Awami League.

He has also been named in a case linked to the killing of a young man during government protests last year.
