Floods kill 829, damage nearly 9,000 homes: UN report

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has shared its preliminary assessment of flood damages in Pakistan with the government, as per a report on Monday.

According to the report, from June 26 to August 30, floods claimed 829 lives and injured 1,116 people across the country.

During this time, 8,975 houses were damaged, 6,138 livestock perished, and widespread destruction hit 655 kilometers of roads along with 238 bridges.

The breakdown showed 432 kilometers of roads damaged in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 201 kilometers in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), 17.6 kilometers in Gilgit-Baltistan, and 3.6 kilometers in Balochistan. Bridge losses included 94 in AJK, 87 in Gilgit-Baltistan, 52 in KP, and 3 in Islamabad.

Livestock losses were also heavy, with KP reporting 5,406 animals lost, followed by 237 in AJK, 231 in Sindh, 121 in Punjab, 67 in Gilgit-Baltistan, and 22 in Balochistan.

Housing damage was highest in KP with 4,659 affected homes, followed by AJK with 2,010, Gilgit-Baltistan 1,253, Balochistan 671, Punjab 226, Sindh 91, and Islamabad 65.

Human casualties included 479 deaths and 350 injuries in KP, 191 deaths and 599 injuries in Punjab, 57 deaths and 78 injuries in Sindh, 41 deaths and 52 injuries in Gilgit-Baltistan, 29 deaths and 28 injuries in AJK, 24 deaths and 5 injuries in Balochistan, and 8 deaths with 3 injuries in Islamabad.
