In a major development, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given the green light to the financial framework of the e-taxi initiative, with a decision to kick off a pilot phase involving 1,100 electric taxis, according to sources on Tuesday.

During a meeting chaired by CM Maryam, it was agreed that solar-powered charging systems will be installed to support the e-taxi fleet. This project is geared towards enhancing public transport services throughout Punjab.

The Chief Minister was also briefed in detail on ongoing and upcoming mass transit projects. A feasibility report for the Yellow Line metro system was presented, and officials shared updates on the province’s environmentally friendly e-taxi plans.

Sources noted that CM Maryam also requested additional route studies for a mass transit system in Gujranwala.

She emphasized that route planning must prioritize public convenience and ordered the immediate launch of work on the Yellow Line, which will run from Jinnah Terminal to Harbanspura.

Various components of the e-taxi project were also discussed, including a plan for government-provided subsidies. One of the suggestions under consideration is to set up charging stations at existing petrol pump sites.
